The Truth About Fragrance in Skincare (And Why We Removed It)

Pick up almost any skincare product and take a look at the ingredients list. Somewhere near the bottom, you will likely find the word ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’. It seems harmless enough — even desirable. But for anyone with sensitive or reactive skin, this single ingredient can be the root cause of a great deal of suffering.
What Is Fragrance in Skincare?
Fragrance is the most common cause of allergic reactions and sensitivity in skincare. It is present in an enormous number of products — moisturisers, serums, cleansers, even products marketed as ‘natural’ or ‘organic’. The challenge is that fragrance ingredients are often listed collectively under the word ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’, hiding dozens of individual chemicals beneath a single label.
This is a significant transparency issue. A product can contain up to 200 fragrance chemicals and list all of them as a single ingredient. Consumers have no way of knowing what is inside.
How Fragrance Harms the Skin
For people with sensitive or reactive skin, fragrance can cause redness, itching, contact dermatitis, and long-term barrier damage — often without the person knowing the product is the cause. This is especially problematic because reactions can be delayed, appearing hours or even days after application, making it difficult to trace the source.
Repeated exposure to fragrance ingredients can also sensitise the skin over time, meaning a person who has no reaction today may develop one after months of regular use. This cumulative sensitisation is one of the most underrecognised risks in skincare.
Why Do Brands Still Use It?
Because it sells. A scented product feels more luxurious. It creates a sensory experience that makes people associate the product with quality and pleasure. Fragrance is not a skin benefit — it is a marketing tool designed to influence how a product feels to use, not how well it actually works.
Why Buffsy Removed It
At Buffsy, we believe calm skin is the real luxury. Removing fragrance was not a compromise — it was a deliberate decision to prioritise your skin over sensory experience. Your skin should not have to pay for how a product smells.
Every Buffsy product is completely fragrance-free. Not low-fragrance. Not ‘naturally scented’. Fragrance-free. It is a non-negotiable part of our formulation philosophy, because we make products for skin that is already overwhelmed — and we refuse to add to that burden.
